Memories
So who in the world would have thought that one day I would be teaching with two of my former students and in my grade group nontheless. Here is a picture of Mrs. Hester and Mrs. Wilkinson along with another friend, Beth Brown when they were second graders in my classroom once upon a time. This is priceless to me and may I add...quite an honor...although it makes me feel a bit "old".

We released our beautiful butterflies!!!!
After completing our caterpillar/butterfly unit...we had a release day which was sad and happy all wrapped into one! We learned so much about them and enjoyed this science unit very much. Just check out these great pictures!
Happy Birthday to Hayley...Our High School Helper
Our class loves Ms. Hayley, our High School helper that comes to our class every afternoon on Sr. Project. She helps students and helps Mrs. Black. We all love her very much! Soon she will graduate from High School and begin college. We wish her the best. The kids made wonderful birthday cards for her! We also enjoyed red velvet cupcakes on her special day!

Firefighter Program
Along with all of the Dr. Seuss activities...we also enjoyed a presentation from Cameron Young's dad. He is a local firefighter and he also brought Captain Tav Matthews along for a wonderful presentation on the life of a firefighter. The children were part of a demo where they tried to see through cloudy vision to resemble a smoke filled room. There were many wonderful questions asked by the children and some even said they wanted to grow up to become firefighters as well. The firetruck was just an added extra plus. We enjoyed our visit with them very much. Another cool thing was that we were in the middle of celebrating our "marble jar" party for good behavior. So we enjoyed pizza and cupcakes along with drinks while we had the presentation. It was a wonderful day!
Dr. Seuss Day
We had an amazing day at school on Friday while we celebrated Dr. Seuss Day!. We first put on our cool "Thing" shirts to match the entire second grade where we lined up to parade through the school. We had a great time. Earlier in the week, Kade Yocum represented our class in reading The Cat in the Hat on the radio station here in Portland. Everyone in the entire school was dressed for the festivities which made it a lot of fun! We were also visited by PHS and their Dr Seuss Was Museum. They did an incredible job and we just had to have our class pictures made with them. Also, Jada Vance, a former student of Mrs. Black's was one of the characters and Jada was recently on American Idol representing talented singers from our area. She made it into the top 25 I think and we are all so proud of her. I included a shot of her, too.

Water Map presented by Mr. Black
While our class is studying maps, globes, geography, map keys and other land forms, we invited Mr. Black to come and share his recent journey down the Atlantic Coast on a boat that took him 4 days. He shared how the map was quite a bit different from a road map or atlas as there are no roads in the water. Then we enjoyed seeing his pictures that he took on his journey. He even saw a black bear on the shore. The class really enjoyed this presentation.

Team Time at Math is the best!!!
We are enjoying studying about Geometry this month. The class enjoyed making solid figures out of snack treats with their teams cooperatively. Learning is so much at its best when we work together.
